Overeating isn't the only way you could be harming your health — extreme dietary restriction could cause serious health problems and even weight gain.

“Check it out!” said my friend Kate. “I’m back in my size 26 jeans. Can you believe it?”

She gave a little twirl before she took her seat at the long communal table in the center of the new macrobiotic restaurant where she’d requested we meet.

“Wow! Your hard work must really be paying off,” I said. “Congratulations. You look great.”

While Kate was radiating joy from the second I saw her, when she opened up the menu, there was a palpable change in her mood. As she looked over the long list of healthy, fresh foods available, she scowled.

“Something wrong?” I asked.

“I just can’t find anything I can eat on this menu,” she lamented.

I scanned the menu’s offerings, the bulk of which were composed of fresh vegetables, brown rice, and beans, I began to question her diet plan. “So what can you eat?” I asked.

“Basically, I’ve cut out all fruit, grains, dairy, high-carb veggies, and saturated fat,” she said. “Honestly, I love what I’m seeing in the mirror, but it’s exhausting.”

I had been where she’d been. “If you’re not feeling great on this diet, have you ever considered that it might be too restrictive for you?” I asked. “You might not be getting the nutrients or calories you need.”

I explained to her how delicious, nutrient-dense foods, like the 100 Superfoods That Double Weight Loss, can be a healthy part of any diet while helping you shed unwanted weight and gave her a quick briefing on the 42 Signs Your Diet is Too Restrictive.

After realizing how many of them applied to her, she opened the menu again. “On second thought, this veggie wrap looks pretty great,” she said.
